Volunteer

Volunteer commitment sustains the operation and vision of the museum.  Individuals from all walks of life find fulfillment in serving visitors in a friendly and courteous manner, conveying historical knowledge, participating in projects, and working toward the common goal of “engaging and inspiring generations through the art, science, and technological innovation of the railroad,” outlined in the museum’s mission statement.  As representatives of the museum, all volunteers play a role in interpreting the people, places, equipment, and artifacts of the railroad in Indiana history.

Opportunities to invest in this mission cover a wide range of interests and abilities, including:

• polite and efficient customer service onboard trains, in the museum store, or in other public interaction
• training toward certified operating crew positions to safely operate railroad equipment
• mechanical skills
• historical and research expertise
• various support activities such as grounds maintenance, clerical skills, and other organizational duties

To become a volunteer, visit our volunteer information center and complete the online registration form

via the button above.  A member of Volunteer Services will contact you to discuss your interests and

skills, and answer any questions.  You will also receive directions for orientation and training.

Volunteer Guidelines

During the process of volunteer orientation and training, new volunteers will be issued a Volunteer Manual that explains basic information about performance of volunteer tasks, including supervision, dress code, and conduct expectations, among many other topics.  Volunteers are expected to read and follow these guidelines.  Copies of the Volunteer Manual are available in the museum store.

Volunteer name badges may be ordered at the museum store for $5.00, paid in advance.  Certain positions require this identification, including coach attendants, museum store staff, and interpreters.

Service Groups/Organizations

If you belong to an organization that seeks a service project, we probably have something you will enjoy. We also have plenty of projects perfect for Eagle Scout Projects and troop/patrol service outings.
